It makes your trip a little less time efficient because you're improvising as you go, but it's exciting! If you have an extended amount of time for your trip it's a fun thing to do. But I noticed that Qantas announced and 2-for-1 sale that just ended Nov 19'08. I also suggest visiting the Australian Tourism Board's website for quick tips and possible specials.
