Sometimes driving around the block will help to get your toddler to fall asleep faster, as the smooth swaying of the car will get them to fall asleep.
As always, when you are on a road trip, he will never sleep (Murphy says hi). I just think that you shouldn't go on long trips until your child is a little older.
I like the tip about the temperature difference. I often forget this.

We were so tempted to wear our baby while in the car. (We didn't, though.) Car trips were a nightmare until we discovered the Downtime Sleepy hat (www.downtimebaby.com). It helped us in the same way that a carrier would to get our baby to sleep, by blocking her view. When she's ready for a nap, we slip the sleep mask over her eyes, sing her songs and she fall asleeps.
